Slam poetry is one of the most popular and transforming genres for high school students today. This product is a passionate collection of creative writing exercises inspired by some of the best slam poetry out on the internet and published in anthologies. I have been teaching this every year of my career now, and I get some of the most incredible work from my students for the entire year during THIS unit.
The creative writing exercises in this product are inspired by the following poems:
1. "My Father's Coat" by Marc Smith (the founder of Slam poetry)
2. "I Wanna Hear a Poem" by Steve Coleman
3. "Where I'm From" by Bobby LeFabre
4. "Totally, Like, Whatever" by Taylor Mali
5. "Ambidextrous Tongues" by Bobby LeFabre
6. "Invisible Workforce" by Bobby LeFabre
Each exercise is unique and aimed at bringing out the most creative and analytic sides of our students. Each exercise is AT LEAST one class period long (watch/read the poem, prewriting, drafting, sharing), depending on how long you spend analyzing the poetic techniques in each poem!
The product ALSO includes four additional analysis activities that can be used with ANY poem that you study, namely, my personally created analysis tool: The Big Six. The Big Six helps students enter a poem from six different places and analyze it from multiple angles - our goal is to help students discover a poem, not answer a bunch of multiple choice questions about what the TEACHER thinks is important. The Big Six elements are:
