If your students are anything like mine, grammar is not what gets them excited. Prepositions. Prepositional Phrases. Yawn. I've spent the last ten years devising ways to make grammar more enticing and engaging to my students because let's face it: even though many people are shying away from teaching it, our students need grammar! They must understand the basic building blocks of the English language in order to be successful writers.
One of the most effective ways I have found to teach grammar and, in this case, prepositions and prepositional phrases, is through the use of mentor texts. Not every student who sits in our classroom is blessed with a childhood that is rich in classic picture book experiences. Every time I read picture books to my classes, they love it. High school students truly enjoy reading children's literature. For that reason among many others, this document includes two different files. One is an answer key and one is a student worksheet that uses sentences from and about Giraffes Can't Dance to help students understand, identify, and write prepositions, prepositional phrases, and the difference between prepositions and adverbs.
If you want to practice grammar in a moderately traditional way with an engaging set of sentences that exposes students to a classic children's story, then this product is perfect for you. Add in any preposition list of your choosing, and you are good to go!
