PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This lesson plan is the second in a series of ninety-six Speaking and Listening lessons designed to teach lower-grade-level students (kindergarten and above) all about Public Speaking. The lesson focuses on gestures and introduces the students to four different types, informally categorized as: (1) picture-painting gestures, (2) feelings gestures, (3) supportive gestures, and (4) suggestive gestures. It then gives students the opportunity to use their pre-existing knowledge to communicate nonverbally, and ends with an activity in which the pupils work with a partner to practice reciting familiar nursery rhymes accompanied by physical gestures. The lesson is appropriate for CCSS standards that ask students to speak audibly and follow agreed-upon rules such as listening to others and taking turns speaking.
