Self-Monitoring while reading is an essential skill and reading behavior that not all students grasp right away. Some readers sound fluent and have little difficulty decoding, yet have trouble comprehending text. Other readers comprehend well, but have trouble making their reading sound right. Still others have trouble with decoding using visual cues. If you have readers like that, this pack will be a huge help!

This Growing Firsties pack is awesome for supporting and building Growth Mindset and will help you to introduce, reinforce and re-teach students (during large and small group instruction) to independently SELF-Monitor while they read during Reading Workshop, Independent Reading, or Read to Self. It works best with readers that have voice-print-match, are attending to print to contain the message and have some sight words in place.

Note: The section for the Visual Cueing System ("Does it Look Right?") is an interpretation of the visual cueing system, more like "Does it Look All The Way Right?" because it works to get readers to look closely all the way through the word. I created it this way because of working with many readers who would substitute a visually similar word. The substitution often results in making the sentence not make sense and/or sound right. The purpose of this pack to is to bring attention to readers to build a stronger awareness to the kinds of mistakes readers can make and to be self-correcting when needed.

It can be used successfully with readers in grades K-2 and as intervention for 3rd graders.

It includes both projectables and printables, along with family communication.
