Two years ago my ninth grade students were obsessed with Frozen! I turned a review of grammar into a fun challenge using the song "Let it Go", which the kids loved!
Along with the lyrics, the activity challenges students to find multiple prepositional and infinitive phrases along with subjects and verbs in the song. The bonus question is to identify participles. Although your classes may not be up to these topics, the song can be a great way to introduce the topics. This year, I will be using the song each unit to dissect the language by topic. The worksheet included can be manipulated to meet your students' needs. For instance, one question asks that they identify a preposition that is used as an adverb, but your students could simply identify an adverb. Modify the assignment as needed.
You can also make the challenge as competitive as your students want. I used large post-it paper for student answers and checked off each answer for the three groups (I had a small class) as we reviewed the work.
