I just created this brief, fun activity to use for introducing scarcity in my economics classes.
We are focusing on the 1st Core Principle of Economics - People Choose! This was an engaging way to introduce this concept.
This takes about 15-20 minutes depending on how much time you want to give the groups. I used this to begin my lesson.
After forming groups, I let them work on their plan of what they are going to do. After about 10 minutes of discussion, they stand to present their "plan". I comment on their choices and then we discuss:
*This is a very real world problem - hard choices need to be made.
*People have unlimited wants but resources are limited - thus Scarcity!
*Scarcity means people have to make choices. Economics is all about making choices.
*This is the 1st Core Principle of Economics - People Choose!
I think this will work well for any classroom from 6th-12 grade.
