Part 1: What are facts and what are opinions? There are some samples to teach from and then students can try identifying both facts and opinions on the second part of the handout.
Part 2: Students will determine if a statement is a fact or an opinion. If it as opinion, they must determine if it is a positive or a negative opinion.
Part 3: Students will need to identify some facts and opinions from the reading and mark these up.
Part 4: Students will write their own paragraph using facts and opinions. They will swap this with a partner and see if the partner can located the facts and opinions.
Several examples and vocabulary definitions guide the students through the learning, and then the student practice problems allow children to create their own facts and opinions! After this lesson, students should better comprehend and pick apart both facts and opinions in various reading materials. It's a great beginning of the year activity but also works well through the rest of the school year.
