This lesson was very effective in teaching my 6th graders how to write a paragraph in their history class. It gives them a cheat sheet they can access when they write their paragraphs and explains in detail what each section should have. There are three sections I focused on:
The lessons goes as follows:
-Students/Teacher will review Parts of a paragraph and what is a claim?
-Teacher will model the first analysis of a sample paragraph
-Students will analyze a paragraph with their partner, then the class will come together to review results
-The last part which I call an Exit Ticket can be done individually or with a partner. Students take strips of a paragraph, and then put it in the correct order. They must then explain what makes it a Topic Sentence, Evidence Sentence or Analysis.
This lesson will help students think about what the different parts of their paragraph should look like. It can also be used with other classes (7th-12th) by adjusting content of the paragraphs. Very helpful with EL learners.
