Teaching students to summarize is a problem in all grades and in all subject areas. Using a magnet summary to scaffold the process makes things infinitely more manageable for both teachers and students. I've included handouts and detailed explanations with examples to help you to teach summary statements to your students. Students can summarize a lesson you taught in class, a story, an expository reading, a poem, or even a process.
To make things easier, I often have students fill out the graphic organizer as an exit ticket. This allows me to check their thinking and make corrections. When they return to class, they write the summary statements for me. It's quick and easy and works really well for all students at all grade levels in all subject areas.
