This resource is great to use for differentiated small group instruction, reading conferences, and student discussion since the questions can apply to any fictional text. By targeting one standard (R.L.6,7,8.4), it will help you gather important data about student progress and mastery and effectively differentiate instruction.
This product includes a detailed teacher guide that explains how and when to use the leveled questions, student note pages, and graphic organizers. It also explains how to evaluate student responses to the questions.
Following the teacher's guide, I have included four pages of leveled questions to guide you through individual reading conferences or small group instruction. Level 1 questions are more fact-focused; Level 2 questions ask for an additional level of analysis; and Level 3 questions push students to explain their reasoning in more depth. Each question page includes 4-6 question sets (each question set has a Level 1, a Level 2, and a Level 3 question) and focuses on a different aspect of word choice: tone, figurative language, and connotation.
For your convenience, I have also included reading task cards containing the question sets. These task cards can be printed, copied, cut out, and laminated to better facilitate individual conferencing and small group instruction. They would also be a great resource to foster student discussion about a common text, or to elicit a quick, thoughtful written response about independent reading.
At the end of the product, I have included two pages of student-friendly notes to guide students through the definitions of tone, connotation, and denotation, as well as the definitions of and examples for three common types of figurative language found in prose: comparisons (e.g., similes, metaphors), personification, and hyperbole. To accompany the notes, I have included a guided notes page to help students organize their learning as they read through the notes. I have also included a page with positive, neutral, and negative tone words for students to reference as they think, write, and talk about tone. Following the notes, I have included two structure-focused graphic organizers. These graphic organizers can be used to provide additional support for students who have not yet mastered the standard, or they can be used as a tool to help all students identify and analyze word choice.
