This is a description of approximately 40 hand motions that I use to teach The Great Gatsby. The hand motions go along with key words or phrases, which, when put together, teach kids the main events and characters chapter by chapter. I have taught Gatsby for many years, and this year was the first I tried it with the hand motions. The final test scores went up and I had several kids tell me that the hand motions and the repetition of doing them every day in class really helped them keep straight who the main characters were and what was happening to them. Some kids even said that I should come up with hand motions for everything we study! A link to a video of my class doing the motions is included, as well as detailed written descriptions for your use.
