Teaching theme is often a struggle. Students struggle with thinking about a text abstractly. With this introductory power point, theme is made a little more concrete. There are a few different definitions of theme out there. For this presentation, theme is a general statement that can be applied to one's life. The theme topic is one word.
This power point consists of 11 slides, several of which contain teaching notes. After a brief introduction of theme, it compares theme statements to bill boards. Students then begin practicing by making themes for pictures (from www.values.com). There are a total of 3 practice picture slides and one text practice slide. Also included is a graphic organizer to help students as they are finding theme topics, theme statements, and supporting details in their reading.
This Power Point is editable, I just ask that you keep the first slide as-is so credit can be given where credit is due. There is no sound, but there is some animation (material entering slide on clicks), so be sure to preview and see how it all works.
