I created these materials to aid me in teaching how to identify theme in literature. As a part of this unit, I also had the students write a short expository essay on one of the themes from our text, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The materials include four items: a power point slide show, a project sheet for the writing project, materials for a bulletin board, and a blank spider map (graphic organizer).
The slide show is designed to give the students the notes on theme and an organizer for identifying theme in Frankenstein (spider map)with directions for this class assignment. I included a list of themes from the novel. After completing the lesson on identifying theme in the novel, the students work on developing broader definitions of these themes. The show also includes directions for this assignment and a completed example organizer to help you model the expectations for the students.
The project sheet explains the writing assignment and gives the students a time line for the assignment including writing mini-lessons, writing workshop dates, and requirements. These materials do not include the mini-lessons mentioned in this document.
The bulletin board document is some of the information in the power point re-formatted for display. I also displayed the completed student spider maps on the bulletin board.
These materials were written for a novel study on Frankenstein, but they could be easily modified for any novel study that teaches theme. This unit was very successful for me. One student essay on "what is knowledge" won the school's writing contest and was read at the awards ceremony at the end of the year.
The preview allows you to view JPEGs of the project sheet and power point and to download the blank spider map.
