In Middle School ELA, we're always trying to draw our students into stronger habits of the mind, higher level thinking skills. Inference is one of the most important skills a young person can learn. Being able to analyze literature to discover its themes, it's "lessons about life" does two things: 1) it sharpens students' inference abilities and 2) it enables students to become more conscious of the great messages that could help them in life. This clinic approach shows what theme is, how writers create themes in their work, and what readers can look for when trying to discover themes in literature. These resources work great for readers or writers because it examines theme from both perspectives and includes modern pop culture examples.
