Teaching about theme in fiction has never been easier with this 5-day lesson plan! This standards-based (both CCSS and TEKS) interactive lesson study of the literary element of Theme will have your students learning about, discussing, and applying ideas about how theme works and is created in fiction throughout the course of five days.
There are five engaging classroom-tested lesson plans that detail everything you will need to do, STEP-BY-STEP, to teach your students about Theme. There are also graphic organizers for each day so that your students are able to apply their learning to the novels and stories you are currently using in class.
The five days culminates in a written paragraph identifying the central theme of a familiar story, using textual evidence in support of the theme. This culminating writing assignments asks the students to take what they learned about theme and apply it to writing a paragraph, which is something that is so important in these days of Common Core and high stakes testing. There is also a graphic organizer to help scaffold the writing for your students.
Each of these lessons can be further applied to any novel study and will carry throughout the entire year.

Once the project is completed, you will have a written theme of a story summary fit for display on a bulletin board! The students will be able to showcase their learning with a detailed, in depth theme summary using textual evidence.
This classroom tested project is something I have used in my own classroom across multiple grade levels with great success. The students enjoyed the process of learning about theme, figuring out various story themes, dissecting mentor text and then using those same ideas to a current classroom novel.
