Description

Teaching about theme in fiction has never been easier with this 5-day lesson plan! This standards-based (both CCSS and TEKS) interactive lesson study of the literary element of Theme will have your students learning about, discussing, and applying ideas about how theme works and is created in fiction throughout the course of five days.

There are five engaging classroom-tested lesson plans that detail everything you will need to do, STEP-BY-STEP, to teach your students about Theme. There are also graphic organizers for each day so that your students are able to apply their learning to the novels and stories you are currently using in class.

The five days culminates in a written paragraph identifying the central theme of a familiar story, using textual evidence in support of the theme. This culminating writing assignments asks the students to take what they learned about theme and apply it to writing a paragraph, which is something that is so important in these days of Common Core and high stakes testing. There is also a graphic organizer to help scaffold the writing for your students.

Each of these lessons can be further applied to any novel study and will carry throughout the entire year.

Included in this resource:

  • 5 Days of Step-by-Step lesson plans
  • Interactive Notebook Pages
  • Anchor Chart example
  • Theme Sort
  • Mentor Text for dissecting theme and its structure
  • Theme organizer for any text
  • Printables and answer keys for all with teacher examples
  • Writing frame for theme summary

Once the project is completed, you will have a written theme of a story summary fit for display on a bulletin board! The students will be able to showcase their learning with a detailed, in depth theme summary using textual evidence.

This classroom tested project is something I have used in my own classroom across multiple grade levels with great success. The students enjoyed the process of learning about theme, figuring out various story themes, dissecting mentor text and then using those same ideas to a current classroom novel.

Prep is easy and painless. Everything you need to effectively teach your students about theme structure using novels and classroom stories is here! This mini-unit is a great way to hit many different standards across the curriculum AND have a wonderful display of student written work.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sara S. says, "This unit is fantastic! It looks incredibly easy to use and is very comprehensive. Thank you so much!"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ JoMarie J. says, "I am looking forward to using this with my students. This resource is so much more than just teaching what theme is and how to find the theme of a story. The lesson plans and the culminating activities are wonderfully written. Thank you!"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Angel D. says, "I love how easy this is to use. Most of my students are below grade level in their reading and really struggle with theme vs. main idea. I like how this breaks theme down into chunks that are easy to understand."
