In this lesson, students will read a selected passage from Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. "Think-Aloud" notes are provided beneath the passage to model metacognition for students.

Students will then use a series of "guided questions" to help them determine the novel's theme.

Students will then read a sample constructed response (checklist provided) for explaining the novel's theme.

Teacher Tips:
-After working through the lesson, read aloud, and mentor constructed response, students should write their own constructed responses about their independent reading books and/or their book club novels.
