Teaching Unit for The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A twenty-day unit designed by The Pedantic Project with a nod to the 11-12 ELA Common Core Standards. The unit begins with a gallery walk that requires students to make predictions and form opinions. After that, the students will divide into groups and use technology to research six components of the late 1800s, including the Gilded Age. Each topic has a graphic organizer (with a teacher key). Students will complete the research and prepare presentations for the class. Rubrics are provided. In addition to the research and presentation component, students will be do the following:
• use context clues to understand vocabulary
• paraphrase and use MLA guidelines
• create a dialectical journal
• have fishbowl discussions
• peer evaluate
• identify and/or evaluate irony, allusions, figurative language, conflict and suspense, author’s purpose and bias, elements of Realism (separate assignments for each)

Daily lessons are anchored in activators and summarizers.

Students will demonstrate understanding by completing writing assignments.

Summative assessments consist of a traditional objective test with some short-answer questions and a project-based assignment.

Teacher keys are provided for all assignments.
