After years of struggling to get my students to both have a formula to guide the writing but still allows for creativity, I created HIT, TREE, and TRACE! I saw growth in my students as they analyzed sample essays and then had to highlight these elements in their own writing.

  • Every body paragraph gets it's own fun acronym and catchy phrase (Example: You've just been assigned an essay. Don't you want to "hit" something? Or maybe, make your first paragraph a "hit"? Remember this, because the first three elements that compose a paragraph are: hook, information about the topic, and a thesis).
  • Or how about TREE? Don't your body paragraphs branch out from the introduction?
  • TRACE: Just like you would trace an outline of your hand, you need to remember these five points....

In this download you will get my PowerPoint for teaching this system of writing that will work for both persuasive and expository essays. In my experience, these elements are pretty universal, and could be applied to any essay type with minor modifications. I have used it to teach SAT prep as well.

This will take an entire week to teach. The slides are divided into days for you. As a bonus, download my free sample essays (expository and argumentative) that you can use as model texts for students to highlight each element of HIT, TREE, TRACE). The essay mark-up & discussion afterwards usually takes a full period!
