Building a community of learners in any course is central to student learning. As technology improves online learning platforms, it is still a challenge to build community among students.

The platform you use will determine how you might share these activities with your students and among your students. For bigger classes, consider assigning students to groups with each group having their own discussion board. Here are 13 activities that may facilitate building community among your online learners.

Getting to Know You Activities

It is as important for your students to get to know you as it is for you to get to know your students, especially online. Consider constructing a creative introduction that focuses on facets of your life as an instructor and an individual. Share things about your family, pets, hobbies, travels, favorites, etc. Let your students see connections between who you are and who they are. These activities can become student activities because in order to build community among your students, they too need to get to know each other.
