Teaching the Erie Canal with Literature and a Group Project
This lesson goes perfectly with New York State Social Studies standards on the Erie Canal or any class that learns about canals in their transportation unit.
The lesson uses the book "The Erie Canal" by Lisa Bullard. Students read through the book either as a whole class read-aloud or in partner groups. While reading the book, students use a note-taking guide sheet to collect important information about how the history of the canal, how it was built, and the impact the canal had on New York State. After reading, students complete a group poster project to illustrate different sections of the book.
The following is included in the download:
1) A detailed lesson plan for teacher preparation
2) A 3-page guide sheet students use to take notes on about the different sections of the book
3) 6 task cards that explain the guidelines for each poster group as to what to include on their poster
4) A teacher evaluation sheet to assess each group's presentation of their poster.
The activities provided in this lesson is designed to be spread out over a few days.
