Tears Of A Tiger is an award winning novel by Sharon M Draper. It is the first book of the Hazelwood High Trilogy. You will need to purchase the books, and then I have a chapter by chapter study guide to accompany the book, as well as a quiz and answer key. The book is excellent and will capture your students attention from the very first page. High school students relate to the dangers of drinking and driving, an accidental death and the ensuing guilt that leads to a suicide. After the tragic death of a popular basketball player the driver of the car struggles to get okay with what has happened, but is unable to do so. The grief counseling just doesn't work and tough tigers never cry. Racist attitudes about young black males adds to the grief of senseless deaths and callous attitudes of some of the adults in their community. The book received numerous awards, one of which is the Coretta Scott King award for excellence in literature. The study guide questions are mostly from the knowledge and comprehension levels to enable the readers to experience success and feelings of "I can do this! I can read, understand and complete this study guide, and then test well on it too!" The student who realizes success will be more inclined to pick up the 2nd book in the trilogy and want to read it too.
