Managing and training techies in a drama program can be a challenge! I created these certifications for my students at Sky View High School. I address many of these things directly in my stagecraft classes, but some skills and knowledge are built by being involved in productions and events.

All students in my Stagecraft course are also de facto members of the Sound & Light Crew for our school. I like to tell them that at any moment, the principal might grab them in the hallway and say, “Hey, you’re on the Sound & Light Crew--can you get some lights and a mic working for me in the auditorium? I have an emergency meeting!” They have to be confident and professional in these circumstances. ...And they DO happen. Besides, I want any event or production to be performed by knowledgeable students who know their stuff and who do their best.

I also created these certifications so I could use my advanced students to help teach and mentor the newer students. New students are required to achieve the basic four, described below, while veteran students achieve the higher ones.

I do not address safety issues too deeply here, since these elements are done by my in other lessons, circumstances and orientations.

I usually use a few days at the beginning of the course to address the most basic certifications: Audio Technician / Sound Design Level 1, Lighting Design Level 1, Theatre Construction Level 1, and Backstage Technician Level 1. Then I assign blank days or one day every other week or so students can work on others. If not complete in thoughtful, deliberate ways, students sometimes try to get all requirements done in a class period, which is nearly impossible with the higher certifications.

I have provided this document in WORD format so you can edit, subtract or add requirements as they pertain to your school and program; rarely are two school so similar that changes should not be made.
