This is a culminating project for the FOSS Variables unit, but could be used independently following instruction on the scientific method/experimental design. Students create a Voicethread (www.voicethread.com), which involves staging photographs to show the steps in the experiment and narrating those photos to describe the steps. My fifth graders LOVED this alternative assessment, and it really showed me what they know. Powerpoint, iMovie, or Google Presentations could also be used. Using class time only, the project took 10 45-minute periods, followed by 1 or 2 periods in which students watched each others' videos and offered compliments and constructive criticism. Students worked in groups of 2-3. Rubric included. I also created my own Voicethread describing the project and showing what a Voicethread is. Unfortunately, I cannot attach that part here, but I will gladly send you a link if you contact me.
