Technology- What is "Catfishing?" Online Assignment
In this Internet-related activity, students use the Internet to answer various questions related to the social media scam known as "catfishing." This is a great activity to make students aware of the phenomenon of "catfishing." Catfishing is basically when a scammer assumes a persona on a social networking site and then creates an entire false identity using the pictures, hobbies, interests, and even friends of someone else. Students may be familiar with the "Catfish" documentary or the MTV series "Catfish- The TV Show."
Questions include defining catfish, the purpose for why someone does it, what occurs during a catfishing scam, where the term comes from, what are warning signs that you might be getting catfished, how to avoid it, etc. In order to answer the questions students will have to do some research and read several sources, etc.
After doing this activity you can be showing students the "Catfish" documentary or an episode from "Catfish- The TV Show" which airs on MTV. You can find the seasons and doc. on Amazon. I show them the first episode of the first season which I bought on Amazon. It is only $1.99 per episode. You can find in our store questions that go along with the episode for students to complete while watching the episode. Please see our store:
