I assembled a set of 8 texts (including 2 websites) which discuss acts of teen courage throughout the ages in a differentiated learning activity model. The set includes both fiction and nonfiction texts of varied difficulty. The set could be used in a middle school reading class, particularly one with differing ability levels. As designated on the handout, the texts are grouped by suggested uses (i.e. whole class read aloud, literature circles, whole class text). Also below each suggested title are paragraph summaries of the texts as well as graded difficulty level. Read the summaries to the students as an introduction to the texts to get them excited to read and discuss! The read aloud text acts as a simple, effective introduction to any of the texts listed in the set. Because the books have one common overarching theme as well as multiple specific themes, the literature circles lend themselves well to class presentations or whole group discussions.
