In telephone math, students use a spelling word to find its value. For example, the word MATH would have a sum of 20: 6 + 2 + 8 + 4 = 20 or a product of 384: 6 x 2 x 8 x 4= 384.
Telephone math is simply using the number keys of a telephone to perform certain operations with words. You can use all 4 operations based upon the grade level and skill set you are teaching.
It may also be used as a workstation. Have students roll a di with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division signs. After each letter, roll the di to see what operation to use. There are so many ways to differentiate. A RULE OF THE DAY can also be set up as a 'function' type machine. It’s an excellent way to reinforce math concepts and strategies.
I keep the telephone template up all year and place my spelling words in a pocket chart right next to this telephone math poster. It is used as both a homework tool as well as a workstation/ center for both Math and Spelling concepts/patterns.
