The Television Commercial Project, a final exam review activity which can be easily adapted to any subject matter or course, provides a means for students to demonstrate in a fun and creative manner the key concepts they have learned during the semester or during a large unit of study. Here is how it works: Students may work individually or in cooperative groups of up to four people. Each student group is assigned a unit of study or key course concept we covered, then the students create a product that focuses on the ideals or aspects of that communication concept. For example, in my semester comprehensive communications course, a group of students may create a commercial that advertises a product designed to improve listening habits, decrease listening barriers, or sharpen paraphrasing skills. In writing the script, the students are instructed to use newly acquired vocabulary associated with their assigned key concept. After the students videotape the commercials, the class views them in order to accomplish two things: to self-assess their performances and to get a catchy review of topics the class studied in that course! Included in this lesson plan is a full project description, sign up sheets, an instructor evaluation form, and a student self-assessment. This product comes as a Word document so it can be easily altered to fit your needs. Enjoy!
