Students listen to rap. They say “I don’t listen to the words I just like the music or the beat”. Tell me about rap consists of two lesson that will take 2 to 3 days where we explore, discuss and disagree with the concept of I can hear something over and over again and it won’t have any effect on me. By the way, why do companies spend millions of dollars every year to advertise their products over and over again?
In Lesson 1 we discuss the main themes of rap music and videos. Students read an article about the negative influences of rap and the negative words about girls/women. In Lesson 2 the students explore the excuses that fuel our attitudes or as I like to say, “the lies we tell ourselves” to convince ourselves something is OK. (When I’m motivated I can talk myself into almost anything). Students will have an opportunity to compare and contrast the differences between the girls, the cultures and the words.
The students get very involved with this activity. They have opinions, and they like to express their opinions. They will listen to their peers’ opinions, disagree and agree, they may read the information and it may possibly change their opinions. You will have the opportunity to see the -- I never thought of that moment.
