Not only does surface area affect the rate of reaction, it also control’s an object’s rate of temperature change. Imagine, how is it easier to cool off, wrapped up and huddled in a ball, or laying down and spread out? Different skin surface area to body volume ratios result in different rates of heat loss. This experiment is designed to analyze the effects of body size and heat loss. Students will use simple models of mammals (plastic bottles) of different sizes to assess the effects of body size on heat loss by measuring how efficiently they can retain or radiate heat.
