Here is an activity sure to challenge your student using the steps of “Bloom’s taxonomy”. This activity will take each student on a journey to investigate if any relationship exists between the air temperature of a given area and the size of an insect population based upon given data. We will start with basic concepts such as dependent and independent variable, create a table from the data provided, graph the data, evaluate an equation of best fit from given computer generated graphics, and identify a relationship that may exist between the variables. As an option and a more advanced look into this problem, the teacher could require each student to use a spreadsheet software to generate the graphs and equations of best fit. If the teacher decides to perform the optional task, then they should download the Free “how to incorporate a spreadsheet software” manual and present it to the class prior to performing this activity.
Use this activity with your pre-algebra students and beyond.
A solution guide will be provided for each step of this activity.
