Tempo: The story of Largo, Andante, and Allegro is our adaptation of the Sioux Legend "How Porcupines Got Their Quills." As the title suggests, we have incorporated Largo the porcupine, Andante the fox, and Allegro the squirrel and used the different speeds of these animals to help tell the story.
Along with the picture ebook, we have included a body percussion activity in which rhythms are used to demonstrate the different tempos. The activity can be incorporated in to the narration of the story, or used as a stand alone activity with the layering of the rhythms.
Also included is a listening assessment provided in a projectable format, as well as a printable format. Using suggested listening excerpts, students can demonstrate knowledge of tempo by pointing to or circling the corresponding character from the book. We hope that this will be a valuable resource for any elementary general music classroom!
