Free!! "Sneak A Peak!"
Fall Themed: Ten Frame Guessing Game

This is a fall themed game that can be used in a whole group, small group, or student partner setting. It will assist students in identifying the amount of objects in a ten-frame format. You insert the card into the envelope and slowly pull out the card. When the entire ten frame is exposed, students will count and state the amount of objects on the card. If using in a whole or small group setting, students can hold up the number of fingers that correspond to the number of objects. This will let you visually assess the students’ ability to quickly identify the number of objects on the ten frame. Students should progress from counting the number of objects, to being able to use 5 and 10 as a benchmark, to automatically identifying the number of objects by their placement in the ten frame.

You can use this game as part of your “Number of the Day”. You can use it periodically throughout the day to help students gain confidence in their ability to identify groups of objects. You can have students quiz each other in partner groups. There are numerous ways to use this game AND students will love it if you play up the mystery!

How to make:
Print out the cards (pg. 3-8) and “Sneak A Peak” label (pg. 8). Glue label on a legal sized envelope. Seal the envelope. Laminate cards and envelope for durability. Cut the end off of the envelope on the left side. This will be where you insert the cards.
Insert the card all the way. Introduce the idea. Tell students that you will be finding a mystery number. Students will look at the ten frame and figure out the mystery number. Explain that they will be number detectives. They can use clues. Some clues to help them would be: The top row is five. The whole ten frame is ten objects. They can count back or count on from 5 or 10.
Slowly pull out the card to add to the drama. As students get more used to the game, you can have them guess whether the number will be more or less that five. Have them explain how they know (i.e. The number is less than 6, because there is no object in the bottom left corner.)
After everyone makes their guesses, pull the card all the way out. Students will be detectives and check to see if they were right. Tell students one of the most important parts of being a detective is checking your work. It is important to confirm that your hypothesis or guess was correct.
I hope your students love playing “Sneak A Peak”. You can use it with numbers, names, words. The possibilities are endless!!!
