Formative assessment goes hand in hand with teaching and learning. It helps students to process and apply their learning, and it informs the teacher about student progress. It involves the students in their own learning process, helping them to set goals and identify steps toward these goals. With the immediate feedback, and the more visible thinking process, students learn to understand how they learn (metacognition) and have a clearer understanding of how their thinking has changed. Research suggests this kind of feedback is the most powerful factor in improving student achievement.
