For this exercise in reading and writing, students select and explain ten quotations from Virginia Woolf’s MRS. DALLOWAY that are significant to the novel for aspects such as characterization, figurative language, theme, etc. Students develop their reading, critical thinking and writing skills as they analyze and explicate portions of this challenging novel.
Included in the file are:
• teacher’s notes, with suggestions for use of the assignment,
• the assignment itself, with an explanation for students, and
• a scoring rubric for teacher use.
The entire file is formatted in Word so that you may easily adapt it for your own instructional purposes.
This project enhances students’ ability to read and appreciate a very different sort of novel, and to develop their reading and writing skills through written explanation of quotations they have carefully selected themselves. With this analysis completed, their ability to state and support their opinions in discussions and persuasive essays will be much stronger than it was before.
