For this exercise in reading and writing, students select and explain ten quotes from Shakespeare’s ROMEO AND JULIET that are significant to the drama for literary aspects such as plot, characterization, figurative language, theme, etc. Students learn to hone their reading, critical thinking and writing skills through their analysis and explication of Shakespeare’s text.
Included in the file are:
• teacher’s notes, with suggestions for use of the assignment,
• the assignment with an explanation for students and
• a scoring rubric for teacher use.
The file is formatted in Word so that you may easily adapt it for your particular instructional purposes.
This project enhances students’ ability to read and appreciate a Shakespearean drama, and to develop their reading and writing skills through written explanation of quotations they have carefully chosen. Once they have completed their analysis, they will find it much easier to proceed with other language arts activities, such as small-group or classroom discussion. They will also have gained confidence in their ability to support arguments in persuasive essays with pertinent quotations.
