For this exercise in reading and writing, students select and explain ten quotations from Harper Lee’s TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD that are significant to the novel for aspects such as characterization, point of view, theme, etc. Students develop their reading, critical thinking and writing skills as they analyze and explicate portions of this challenging novel.
Included in the file are:
• teacher’s notes, with suggestions for use of the assignment,
• the assignment itself, with an explanation for students, and
• a scoring rubric for teacher use.
The entire file is formatted in Word so that you may easily adapt it for your own instructional purposes.
This project develops helps younger students learn to state an opinion and support it with direct quotations from a text. While carefully reading this skillfully crafted novel, students work on their writing skills through written explanation of quotations they have selected themselves. With this analysis completed, their ability to state and support their opinions in discussions and persuasive essays will be much stronger than it was before.
