Here is a fun and different way of looking at tens and ones. The gumball machines are the tens, and the gumballs are the ones. This is great for independent centers or small group instruction. Here’s how to use this center: Print and laminate all pieces for durability. Each child at the center needs 9 gumballs, 9 gumball machines, a work mat (there are 2 to choose from), and a set of number cards. (The cards have different colored borders so they don’t get mixed up.) The child pulls a card out of a baggie, or whatever you store them in, and uses the gumball machines and gumballs to show the number in tens and ones on the mat. There is also a recording sheet for children to show their work.
