Term sets are a fun way to get students thinking critically and flexibly about scientific concepts while practicing scientific vocabulary. Each "set" consists of 5 terms from the content area, in this case: Biochemistry. Students consider the terms in a single table and select one that does not fit with the others, providing a brief written explanation to support their choice. They then share their answers with classmates (or consult a textbook/notes) to check for accuracy. There may be more than one correct answer and students should be encouraged to discuss the options. After discussion, students may record updated information in the space provided. This activity serves as an effective formative assessment tool as student thinking is readily observed in real time. It may also be used as a homework assignment to be discussed in class the following day. This is a word document, so you may rearrange the tables and or alter the term sets to suit your needs. I sometimes use blank tables for students to create their own term sets. I have included several exemplars for clarity.
