Theodore Kaczynski went from being the poster boy of the most promising from American’s University System to being a madman to back to looking like he could be teaching on any college campus again. At 16, Kaczynski, a child prodigy, began his undergraduate degree at Harvard University.

While at Harvard Ted was put in a clinical trial of 22 students to test exposure to extreme stress. These experiments were carried on by Henry Murray at Harvard and Murray described them as "vehement, sweeping and personally abusive” attacks which were assaults on the subjects’ egos and most dear ideas and beliefs.

Ted Kaczynski moved to a cabin in Montana where he became more and more isolated. He was doing a lot of reading about sociology and political philosophy while being in this self imposed exile. He decided more violent methods were the only solution to rectifying the ills of industrial civilization. He saw violent collapse as the only way to bring down the techno-industrial system and began building his bombs. Ultimately, it was at his same wilderness retreat, that his Unabombing came to an end with his arrest.

The main reason the FBI finally caught the Unabomber was that his brother David turned him into the FBI after the FBI published Ted's manifesto in the Washington Post" and "New York Times.

It is easy to forget that Ted Kaczynski was a brilliant student. Thus, while some of his manifesto seems like a call to the Luddites, there are some ideas which must give one pause. Thus, he gives these thought provoking examples: “Imagine a society that subjects people to conditions that make them terribly unhappy, then gives them the drugs to take away their unhappiness. Science fiction? It is already happening to some extent in our own society. It is well known that the rate of clinical depression had been greatly increasing in recent decades....this is due to disruption of the power process...The entertainment industry serves as an important psychological tool of the system, possibly even when it is dishing out large amounts of sex and violence. Entertainment provides modern man with an essential means of escape. While absorbed in television, videos, etc., he can forget stress, anxiety, frustration, dissatisfaction.”

This is a powerpoint presentation about the case against Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols for the Oklahoma City Bombing of the federal building there in 1995. Also included are two accomplices, David Fortier and his wife Linda who took a deal to testify against the other two. This is both a very visual and textual presentation of the case and all of its nuances which includes the following information:

It was the governments botched attacks on Waco and Ruby Ridge which inspired McVeigh to bomb Oklahoma City. He blamed the government for the deaths at both and sought revenge for them. McVeigh hoped to inspire a revolt against the federal government. McVeigh had an alternate target to the federal building. This was Lon Horiuchi who was the FBI sniper who killed Mrs. Weaver at Ruby Ridge.

Nichols and McVeigh constructed their bomb, an ANNM explosive device, at a lakeside campground. They mounted it in the back of a rented Ryder truck. On April 19, 1995, McVeigh drove the truck to the front of the Murrah Federal Building just as its offices opened. He lit a delayed fuse and took cover. At 09:02, the bomb exploded. It destroyed the north half of the building, killing 168 people, including 19 children in the day care center on the second floor, and injuring 450 others.

McVeigh was continually probed as to other conspirators and replied, ”Because the truth is, I blew up the Murrah Building, and isn't it kind of scary that one man could wreak this kind of hell?”

McVeigh left a letter on the day of his execution."For those die-hard conspiracy theorists who will refuse to believe this, I turn the tables and say: Show me where I needed anyone else. Financing? Logistics? Specialized tech skills? Brainpower? Strategy? ... Show me where I needed a dark, mysterious 'Mr. X’!"

Jahar is the new model of the recruit for Al-Qaeda or ISIS involvement. Mounting a 9/11 style attack is too difficult in today’s world. Rather, try to entice these disappointed lone wolf young men who are reading their materials online on their computers in their families’ basements. A terror group didn’t have to train four pilots to fly jets to achieve the Boston Marathon Bombing. There is no terrorism cell leader being hunted down for the carnage. Jahar is the one carrying the entire load of responsibility as would Tamerlan if he had survived. But an Osama bin Laden kingpin is safe from elite military units like the SEALS.

Of course, the one thing a terror group can’t predict is whether it can recruit a Jahar without a Tamerlan. After all, Tamerlan had already killed three men he knew without anyone else’s prompting. That had not even been jihadist motivated. He went on with his life as if he’d done nothing. Tamerlan is someone a terror group could thus predict would be motivated to continue murdering if you just gave him a reason he liked and jihadism was already near and dear to his heart.

But if we have just Jahar down on the computer in the basement, will he ever be able to get up and do anything on his own? While Tamerlan was busy building his bombs on the kitchen table and buying cases for them at Target, Jahar was surfing social media on his computer. Only time will tell if the terror groups are right, that they can motivate the man in the basement on the computer to do something for it. Otherwise, it will need to face that it is always handy to have a murderous psychopath upstairs in the kitchen.
