This is a 30-question test on context clues. Some questions are open-ended for students to write in the correct answer and some are multiple choice. After teaching how to gather definitions by using a variety of context clues, you can give your class this test to see if they can actually use those strategies. The types on context clues included in this lesson are:
Definition clues: the definition of the word in question is in the sentence, often separated by dashes or commas or contained in parentheses.
Synonym clues: There is a synonym of the word in the sentence or passage.
Antonym clues: An antonym of the word is given in the sentence or passage.
General Sense of the Passage clues: There is so much information given in the passage that the student is able to determine the definition. (The information in the passage usually provides enough background knowledge to determine the definition.)
Answer key is included.
