Get your students THINKING and making GENERALIZATIONS about the design of READING TEST QUESTIONS with a standardized test questions sort activity. In small groups, students discuss and categorize the types of questions found on a standardized reading test in order to better understand what to expect from a multiple choice reading test.
Often students think that "tests" are unpredictable, but I believe this is just not true. Based on the genre of the text and our grade-levels standards, we can predict many of the questions students may be asked about a test passage.
These questions were taken from the released reading tests from the NC EOG (all common core-based). To use, in one of your initial lessons for test-prep, have students sort the questions from your grade level and make generalizations about the types of questions they will see. Later, discuss strategies for answering questions given the categories that students have created.
