This is a collection of test prep passages based on Common Core literary standards. There are a minimum of 5 passages for each grade level with assessment questions that use the language of the standards. The passages are labeled with their Lexile levels, and each question is aligned to specific literary standards. A table is provided in the free preview that outlines the passages and the standards addressed for each grade level.
There are a total of 51 Common Core Test Prep questions for grade 3; 63 questions for grade 4, and 51 questions for grade 5.

ALL QUESTIONS ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE and many support the higher level challenge of PARCC style assessment questions.
The stories included in the passage are as follows:
“Stillness Comes” (Poem) This half-page poem is about the hours of the day passing.
3rd- Lexile 550; 4th- Lexile 550; 5th- Lexile 550
“Alex and Judith” (Realistic Fiction) This two-page writing is structured as a conversation between and mother and her son with a counselor. The family has moved to a new city, and it is going to take some time to adjust.
3rd- Lexile 460; 4th- Lexile 600; 5th- Lexile 690
“The Story of the First Butterflies” (Folktale) This 1 page writing tells how the Great Spirit decided to make butterflies for the children of earth.
3rd- Lexile 560 4th- Lexile 560
“Yankee Doodle” (Poem, Song Choreography, and Nonfiction) This section contains three writings based on the poem, Yankee Doodle. The traditional poem is available along with a table that shows how these words can be set to motions. A nonfiction paragraph is included to provide a historical perspective for the origins of the poem.
3rd- Lexile 600
“The Mighty Hunter”; “The Hunt”; “The Big Bear” (Roman Mythology; Iroquois Mythology) This section contains three writings. “The Mighty Hunter” is a full page writing and the other two stories are paragraphs about different constellations and how they came to be known.
4th- Lexile 670
“Rockefeller’s Tea” (Fiction) This story is set during the Revolutionary War- specifically the night of the Boston Tea Party. It is told from the point of view of a dog watching his master prepare for the night out on the harbor.
4th- Lexile 710
“Magic Around Me” (Memoir) This story is a memory of how imagination played a role in a young author’s life.
5th- Lexile 890
“Young Holmes” (Mystery) This section contains two short stories from a young Sherlock Holmes only referred to in the passages as Holmes. He is a 7-yr-old boy who helps his neighbor solve “The Case of the Missing Pumpkin Pie”, and he answers riddles posed by neighborhood boys in the short story, “Riddles.”
5th- Lexile 770
���A Collection of Four Stories” This section contains 4 passages. The Lexile level is based on the overall average of all four stories.
“The Heron Who Was Hard to Please”
For 3rd grade this is a short paragraph fable.
For 4th and 5th grade, this is a fable written as a poem.
“The Raven and the Fox” (Fable written as a poem)
“The Dove and the Ant” (Fable written as a poem)
“Why the Bear Has a Short Tail” (Fable written as a short
