I have created a literacy system that is modeled after award-winning software (but without the astronomical price!). My fluency and comprehension system, which is aligned with the Common Core and the Indiana Academic Standards, uses the technology in PowerPoint and does the following:
• runs independently of the internet, so there are no issues with the internet crashing or the system working slowly because of the number of people using the program.
•employs features similar to those found in award-winning software.
•provides supports that teach students how to look back into the text in order to respond to text-based questions.
•employs the science behind brain research to help students improve upon their reading fluency and comprehension.
•measures student knowledge with multiple choice questions written in the same manner as the questions found on the new generation of assessments
•is differentiated so that students can select their “just-right” level in order to maximize their learning.
•reviews a multitude of standards that will help students retain what you previously taught them.
•provides students with IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK of their answers and an EXPLANATION of incorrect answers (on the multiple-choice items).
Here's what's included in the system:
Fluency Practice: Students must read a story before the words disappear off of the screen. Students have the option of selecting the red speed (slow), yellow speed (medium) or green speed (fast). Students may then read the passage again (repeated reading!) or move on to the comprehension assessment. Optional: Students can listen to the selection before the fluency work begins.
Comprehension Assessment-Students respond to 14 multiple choice questions modeled after the questions on the new generation of College and Career Ready Assessments. Built-in supports provide the students with hints so that they know which part of the passage to reread in order to arrive at the correct answer. Students also respond to either a constructed response or extended response item.
This fourth installment uses the story of Snow-White.
1. Students must be familiar with fairy tales so that they understand allusions to fairy tales in other literary works.
2. The lexile of the story is 1000, which is a 7th grade level. The reading passage is complex enough to challenge students. However, most students are familiar with the story of Snow-White, so they will be able to comprehend the harder text.
