This test preparation packet practices vocabulary questions found on standardized tests. This set practices choosing a word or words that defines the underlined word. Included in the packet are fifteen paragraphs (five pages with three questions on each) which ask the student to determine meaning of the underlined word.
In my classroom we practice this type of question by trying out the answer choices in the sentence. Students can also use context clues and background knowledge to determine the word’s meaning. We practice searching out restatements, comparisons, contrasts, examples, synonyms, and antonyms hidden within paragraphs. I have a free product A Context Clues Lesson: Diamonds or Coal that could help students with this work.
I plan to use these sheets one per week for the five weeks before our STAAR test. This way they will have recurring practice of the skill.
An additional format is included with 2 answer sheets (one asks the students to explain their thinking in addition to giving their answer). This format can be used either as a scavenger hunt or as task cards.
I may have the students complete both formats – one over the course of five weeks and one all at once at the end.
This product is for grades 3 – 5.
