This test preparation packet practices vocabulary questions found on standardized tests. This set of questions focuses on those questions that use a dictionary entry with a multiple meaning word. Included in the packet are fifteen paragraphs (five pages with three questions on each)with a dictionary entry for a multiple meaning word found in each paragraph.
When my students find these types of questions, I suggest they make a quick sketch beside each definition to help them think through what is being described. After completing their sketches they go back and reread the sentence to decide which meaning is being used.
Another strategy is to replace the word in the paragraph with each definition to determine which one works the best.
I plan to use these sheets one per week for the five weeks before our STAAR test. This way they will have recurring practice of the skill.
This format is definitely “no prep”. It is copy and go. Or even better, just make one copy to complete under the document camera or just project the product page on your whiteboard and have students write on it!
An additional format is included with 2 answer sheets (one asks the students to explain their thinking in addition to giving their answer). This format can be used either as a scavenger hunt or as task cards.
I may have the students complete both formats – one over the course of five weeks and one all at once at the end.
