Test Prep Vocabulary Bundle
This test preparation packet practices vocabulary questions found on standardized tests. This set practices using the meanings of prefixes and suffixes to determine word meaning. Included in the packet are fifteen paragraphs (five pages with three questions on each) which ask the student to determine word meaning for a word containing either a prefix or a suffix.
In my classroom we practice prefixes and suffixes throughout the year. We create charts in our word study notebooks with the affixes and their meanings. Students add words to these charts as they are found in class or in their reading. Also we identify words with prefixes and suffixes in our mentor sentence each day. Each time we define them using the meaning of the affix. For example, unhappy is defined as “not happy” instead of “sad” when working with affixes. (Synonyms may also be included, but the affixes are always addressed.)
I plan to use these sheets one per week for the five weeks before our STAAR test. This way they will have recurring practice of the skill.
An additional format is included with 2 answer sheets (one asks the students to explain their thinking in addition to giving their answer). This format can be used either as a scavenger hunt or as task cards.
I may have the students complete both formats – one over the course of five weeks and one all at once at the end.
This product is for grades 3 – 5.
