This is a small group reader's theater is for 3 students. It was written to remind students about our test taking strategies. I usually give it to students who aren't following the strategies as a reminder of what to do. I also assign it to students who get a little too stressed before a test. One of the other things this script discusses is how to look at tests. The test taking strategies include: Reading text, questions, and answers twice - reading ALL answers before choosing one - if it is available, allow the computer to read text and/or questions to you - and to always check and show your work.
In the script Vanessa is feeling very nervous about the test. Tom and Mary tell her about Mrs. Whitesides test taking secrets and assure her that they work. They also tell Vanessa that she needs to look at tests differently. Tom and Mary explain that tests are a way to see what you’ve learned and what you still need to work on. When you’ve done your best - including following all the test taking secrets - you don’t need to feel guilty about your score. There is a writing assignment for the students to do at the bottom of the last page where they state what their goal is for the text and write about the strategies.
I challenge my students to try the same thing as the students in the script. I use all reader's theaters to encourage my students to practice fluency but often try to tie in other subjects as well. This is a fun way to do something that they need. My scripts are in black and white with only the occasional color picture on front so they are cheaper and easier to photo copy. The problem with many other reader's theaters is that students spend a lot of time waiting for their part. When you have a small group they get more practice and you get less off task behaviors. My name is Melanie Whitesides but my store name is Wonbyone and I hope that your students enjoy this script as much as mine did. I did not advertise this for 3rd grade but my higher group of 3rd graders were fine performing this. They underlined potential trouble words as they read it and then put them on the front page. If you like this script look for other scripts that teach a lesson at my site. Let me know how things go!
