This experiment will take your students through the engineering design process as they create a boat from aluminum foil. After engineering a prototype, the student redesigns the boat to see if she or he can get it to hold more marbles. The goal is to see whose boat can hold the most marbles. This is a classic experiment, but these worksheets help students approach the activity in an organized and thoughtful manner (and of course follow the engineering design process). To see this a video clip of how to teach this experiment and learn the secret of flotation known as Archimedes Principal please go to the sciencebug.org website and click on the Science Files page. Choose “The Great Cardboard Boat Race” link. There are other free materials available on this site as well on many different topics.
