We all remember back in the 90s when pogs and Alanis Morissette were cool. For this activity, your students will jump back into the 90s and evaluate one of the most iconic songs of the era, "Ironic."
At this point most of us are aware that the song has very little irony; however, I've reached the point where most of my students have never even heard of it before, so it makes a perfect practice test for identifying irony (in case you were biting your nails, she ends up with 2.5 successful ironic remarks out of 11 attempts).
With the editable presentation and attached worksheets (answer key included!), students will listen to the song, collaborate with peers to evaluate the 'ironic' statements and state their reasoning for their conclusions, as well as turn the un-ironic statements into truly ironic situations.
This activity is meant for students who have a base understanding of irony and will make your students irony experts, able to spot irony from a mile away (but maybe not hyperbole!).
