This test includes 10 multiple choice questions and five quotation analysis questions that are meant to be answered in one paragraph each. My instructions state that the students should answer four out of the five quotation analysis questions, but you are welcome to change these instructions if you would like.
In addition to a thorough study of the play, students will need to understand the basics of traditional comic structure as it is described by Aristotle in Poetics and practiced by Shakespeare.
I have a Power Point Presentation about traditional comedy and the basic premise of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Please check my store if you are interested in buying the Power Point in addition to the test.
I used this test in a 10th Grade Honors English course. The students had already learned basic poetic terminology and understood the medieval concept of courtly love. We also watched the 1999 film adaptation of the play, and knowledge of the film is necessary for one multiple-choice question.
An answer key is provided for the multiple choice, and I’ve written extensive guidelines for the possible answers that students might give in the subjective part of the test.
